Basel: 10 hours of travel

10 hours of travel to Basel

Are you in a foreign city but only have a few hours or less to visit? Then let yourself be inspired by my new format “10 Hours of Travel”! Here I write about cities that particularly fascinate me and show you how you can explore them in under ten hours.

Do you have very little time? No problem! With my three absolute highlights you can quickly experience the quintessence of every city.

I hope you enjoy reading and of course a nice trip!

10 hours of travel: Once in Basel and back

Basel. The third-largest city in Switzerland and a real pearl on the Rhine. How much I love going into the city and strolling between the Mittlerer Brücke and Schwarzwaldbrücke through the south side with its enchanting old town and its wonderful baroque buildings. A trip to one of the over 40 museums and a culinary excursion into the melting pot of European cuisine is always a treat. But the path along the Rhine is also beautiful and invites you to reflect. So here is my travel guide for Basel travelers who want to explore the city in ten hours or less.

Table of contents :

The essentials in brief:

The most beautiful sights and museums can be found between the Middle Bridge and the Black Forest Bridge on the southern side of the Rhine, including the old town and the Basel Art Museum.

At numerous trade fairs and in over 40 museums you can experience exciting and constantly changing exhibitions, which are best informed about in advance.

If you don't have much time, it's worth taking a walk from the St. Alban Gate at the main train station to the old town and a walk back along the Rhine.

A walk through Basel

But today we're going to go through the time-saving option. When you arrive at the main train station, simply walk through the Vorstädte district past the Tinguely fountain and to the Wettstein Bridge. From here you have a phenomenal view over the Rhine and can orientate yourself. My recommendation: Go to the Kunstmuseum Basel, through the old town of Großbasel, over the Mittlere Brücke and then to the Tinguely Museum. From there you go back over the Black Forest Bridge to the Letziturm and the St. Alban Gate, from there you are quickly back at the SBB train station.

This tour lasts a good 1.5 hours and you have enough time to relax, visit the museums of your choice and have a delicious meal. If you want to go very quickly, concentrate on the Wettstein Bridge, the Tinguely Fountain and the old town of Großbasel, from where you can quickly find your way back to the train station.

Which museums in Basel are worth it?

Basel is a city with a rich culture and art scene and offers a variety of art museums, exhibitions and art fairs. Some Lesunja Fine Jewelry collections also found their inspiration here. Here are my recommendations:

  1. A visit to the Kunstmuseum Basel: The Kunstmuseum Basel is the oldest public museum in the world and houses one of the most important art collections in Europe. The collection includes works by artists such as Picasso, van Gogh, Monet, Cézanne and many others.

  2. Fondation Beyeler: The Fondation Beyeler is an art museum in Riehen near Basel. The collection includes works from classical modernism, impressionism and contemporary art. The museum is housed in a spectacular building designed by Renzo Piano.

  3. Schaulager: The Schaulager is a private museum for contemporary art in Münchenstein near Basel. It features works not normally shown in public museums, as well as temporary exhibitions by renowned artists.

  4. Art Basel: Art Basel is one of the most important art fairs in the world and takes place in Basel every June. Here, more than 250 galleries from around the world present works by over 4,000 artists.

  5. Blickfang Basel: Becoming an exhibitor at Blickfang Basel was one of the greatest joys for me and the Lesunja Fine Jewelery team. We met great people here and we look forward to exhibiting here again every year. The design fair with over 130 labels takes place in several cities and is particularly popular in Basel.

  6. List Art Fair: The next Art Fair takes place every June and is a platform for young, aspiring artists and galleries. Works by emerging artists from around the world are exhibited here.

  7. Scope Basel: Scope Basel is an art fair that presents contemporary art from around the world. The fair takes place every June and features a wide range of works, from painting and sculpture to video and installation art.

  8. Museum Tinguely: The Museum Tinguely is dedicated to the work of the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely. His kinetic sculptures as well as works by other artists who deal with movement and machines are exhibited here.

These are just a few of the many art museums, exhibitions, and art fairs in Basel. Depending on your interests and time budget, there are many other ways to explore the city's art scene.

Eating out in Basel is really fun

Eating out in Basel is really fun

Can eating in Basel be cheap? That depends. But it is definitely worth it. The wonderful composition of Swiss, French and Italian cuisine with a German twist couldn't be more appealing than here.

I recommend the Basel restaurant Schlüsselzunft, which is conveniently located close to the train station and the old town. As a member of the guild of established Swiss restaurateurs, the Swiss restaurant offers a very special experience: The excellent chefs know how to use regional food in a variety of ways and combine it with the wonderful wines of Basel and the surrounding area. However, you should plan some time here to enjoy the food in the beautiful interior. The short route to the train station will meet you here.
